Practicing self-care at Number 9 in Middelburg
Can you think of anything better than feeling at home while out on vacation? Number 9 holiday apartments offer a cozy and relaxing place to rest your head in the charming city of Middelburg. This stylish Scandinavian accommodation is the perfect place to get that much-needed r&r!
The building that houses these vacation spots is quite old. In fact, it was built in the 16th century and was used for many years as an auction house. Though you’d hardly believe that this aged and beautiful architectural structure holds modern and stylish apartments, it does! From its exposed wood ceiling to its simplistic yet luxurious decor to its spacious kitchen with all the amenities, Number 9 truly has got it going on.
A brief history
The owners, Jochem and Emilie, bought the old auction house in 2016. From then on it was a huge project for them to renovate. The building had no sewerage, the roof was falling apart, and the building was filled with old auction stuff. Though it took a lot of hard work and effort, the two held on to their vision of how beautiful the end result would be. And we are so glad they did! Now, in 2021, three of the four apartments are finished and they are stunning.
Arrival
Middelburg is very easy to get to by public transportation so Kiki and I took the train. From the station, the apartment is just a short walk away. Its location is spectacular, right outside of the city center and with a beautiful view over the canal. We were greeted warmly by Jochem, who led us up the narrow staircase to our room. The door had a personalized sign to welcome us, so cute! When we walked into our apartment our jaws literally dropped. Not only was it gorgeous, but it was also huge!
Apartment J
Currently, there are three apartments available. Apartment E, Apartment T, and Apartment J – where we stayed. All three are beautifully decorated with their own unique charm. We chose J for a few reasons – the exposed wood ceiling, the picturesque bathtub, and its letter (!) J is the best letter of the alphabet. 😉
The apartment has a fully equipped kitchen with everything you need to make a delicious meal, including salt, pepper, and oil. The living room is simple, with a blush pink sofa, smart T.V., and large windows. Stairs lead to the upper level which is exposed, like a loft. Here you find the famous bathtub, cozy bed, and gorgeous skylight windows.
R&R
Many people visit Middelburg for its quaintness and close proximity to the sea, but we visited Number 9 with the sole intention to relax. We came prepared with bath bombs, bubbles, bath oils, and, my personal favorite, facemasks! The tub is perfect and comfortable enough to fit two – great for our lovebirds out there. And can we talk about that backdrop? Nothing beats the warmth you feel from a cabin-like wood ceiling. Of course, we just had to have a bubble bath photoshoot – can you blame us?
Middelburg
Zeeland’s capital city, Middelburg, is absolutely charming. Only 15 minutes from the sea, it also has everything one would expect to find in a European city – shopping, terraces, towering churches, and a beautiful square. However, one thing really sets this place apart – everyone is so happy! People always joke that when the sun comes out, the Dutch come out. Well, that was really evident here. Zeeland is known to be the sunniest area in the Netherlands and there is often less rainfall in summer than in the rest of the country. You could really tell how that little extra vitamin D has positive effects on the locals. Everyone was so friendly.
Goodbyes
Our two-night stay was everything we wanted it to be. We came exhausted and left feeling absolutely rejuvenated. If you are looking for a relaxing get-away, we highly recommend you come to Zeeland for the beach, Middelburg for its friendly charm, and Number-9 for that home-away-from-home feeling.
