De Heerlijkheid van Noordwelle

If I were to tell you that there is a little slice of Spain in the Netherlands, would you believe me? Well, it’s true! De Heerlijkheid van Noordwelle in Zeeland offers a cozy terrace, heated pool, and a backdrop filled with palm trees. This unique B&B gives the feeling of going abroad without the hassle of long-distance travel.

When Kiki and I discovered this tropical-looking bed and breakfast we just knew we had to visit. The palm trees, the pool, the interior design, it was love at first sight! We still can’t believe it exists in Holland and only an hour’s drive away from where we live. Could it really be possible to be transported to paradise without leaving the comfort of our home country? Turns out, it absolutely is!

Location

De Heerlijkheid van Noordwelle is located – believe it or not – in Noordwelle (!) – a tiny village in the province of Zeeland about 5 km southwest of Scharendijke and only a 3km bike ride away from the sea. Approximately 330 people reside there, so you can imagine just how cozy it is. When I arrived I was in awe of the architecture and how quiet it was. The loudest noises came from birds singing and the occasional church bells ringing.

Arrival

When we arrived, we were greeted warmly by the owner, Rachel, and led directly to the outside terrace – where delicious wine and a yummy charcuterie board were waiting for us to enjoy. The view was breathtaking and the sun was shining, truly playing into the illusion of us out on a summer holiday! We sat and chatted with Rachel and her husband as if we were catching up like old friends. It was truly inspirational to see how passionate they were about their B&B – as they should be! Everything about their establishment is beautifully designed and meticulously thought out to the very last detail.

The Rooms

There are a total of 5 rooms offered – each with its own bathroom! Rooms vary from standard to luxury, have views of either the local church or pool and come with or without a living room space. We stayed in Room 1 and Room 4, both of which are luxury rooms with double beds and a balcony with a poolside view. And can I just say, whoever was in charge of the interior design for this B&B deserves an award! Both rooms, decorated with completely different color schemes and themes, were absolutely gorgeous.

The common area

The ongoing theme of beautiful interior decoration continues as you move into the common area. If you, by chance, end up visiting when the weather is wet and grey, you can find plenty of comfortable places to lounge here. Not only are there couch and lounge chair seating, but you’ll also find a dining room table perfect for playing games (they have a great selection to choose from). For something a little more intimate, there are two-person tables available, so why not share a sweet conversation with your beau? As long as the restaurants are still closed (thanks covid-19), they welcome you to bring your own pre-made meal or order delivery. Don’t worry about utensils, they’ve got you covered. For our wine and beer connoisseurs, they offer an incredible selection for you to choose from.

The Terrace

For a mid-week visit in the middle of March, we sure lucked out with the weather. It was warm enough for us to put on our sundresses and sunbathe! We spent the majority of our visit on the terrace, sipping sangria and dipping our feet into the pool. Can you blame us? One of the best things about De Heerlijkheid van Noordwelle is the fact that they only offer five two-person rooms. That guarantees plenty of space in the pool and a definite seat on the terrace!

Things to do in the area

There is one misconception we’d like to clear up. Children over the age of five ARE welcome here. However, they must be careful. The pool is unfenced and deep and although there aren’t really any children’s facilities at the B&B specifically,  with a beach close by there are plenty of activities a family can enjoy in the area – including bicycle tours, horseback riding, and seal watching!

Breakfast

Waking up was incredibly easy to do thanks to the most heavenly smell coming from the kitchen! Along with the typical dutch assortment of bread and cheese were fresh-squeezed orange juice, smoothies, fruit, home-cooked macaroons, scrambled eggs, bacon, yogurt, and all the spreads you can think of. Rachel truly made a breakfast fit for royalty.

Our gratitude

We certainly hit the jackpot finding this gem. The hospitality was incredible, the interior was beautiful, and the outside truly felt like paradise. Fun fact: the palm trees are very much real! So for anyone who is looking to escape without literally escaping, don’t hesitate and book your stay today.
